Out of the houses poured a number of Arabs – men, women and children, waving and shouting in the false jubilation which these people always accord any apparently victorious troops. Their sheikh recognised me as the officer in command and ran to me with outstretched arms. He gibbered words of greeting. But my right hand was on my automatic, just in case. He fumbled at me and tried to kiss my hands. When I pulled back in disgust, he grovelled on his knees and kissed my boots.
